While rain stalls Wimbledon action yet again, here is a look back at Ladies’ Singles match highlights on Day 5:
Wimbledon 2011 Results: Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova Advance
No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki def. Virginie Razzano 6-1, 6-3. Another routine victory for the top seed, which she has to be very happy with given her disappointing Roland Garros. Things get much, much tougher for her in the next round against hard hitting No. 27 Jarmila Gajdosova, who gave Venus Williams all she could handle last year at Wimbledon. If Gajdosova is on her game, Wozniacki could almost be considered the underdog.
No. 4 Victoria Azarenka def. No. 25 Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. In a match that just wrapped up under the roof on Centre Court, Victoria Azarenka fended off an extremely dangerous Daniela Hantuchova, winning four of the five games that were contested after the roof closed. Hantuchova has recent wins over Wozniacki, Li Na, and Venus Williams, so it’s a much more impressive win than merely the seeds would indicate.
No. 8 Petra Kvitova def. No. 29 Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-3. A very impressive win for Kvitova, who took out ‘s-Hertogenbosch champion Roberta Vinci with relative ease out on Court 18. Kvitova looks well on her way to making a second straight deep run at Wimbledon, with a powerhouse quarterfinal match against Venus Williams still possible.
No. 20 Peng Shuai def. Elena Baltacha 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. With her draw, Elena Baltacha had a real chance of carrying the Union Jack into the second week of the Ladies’ Singles for the first time in over a decade. But Peng Shuai, who has had a phenomenal 2011, was better in the deciding moments of the final set, ousting the last remaining British woman in the draw.
Nadia Petrova def. Kateryna Bondarenko 6-3, 6-2. Even when she was in the top ten, Nadia Petrova always managed to stay well under the radar. But now that she’s not even seeded, Petrova is stealthier than ever. She quietly ousted No. 14 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets in the second round, and today dismissed Kateryna Bondarenko with ease. Petrova next faces Azarenka, a match in which she should be a considerable underdog.
