No. 4 Andy Murray def. Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4). In yet another late match for their native son, Andy Murray battled Ivan Ljubicic for four sets under the roof and lights in a 2011 Wimbledon match that stretched well past darkness in London.
Wimbledon 2011 Results: No. 4 Andy Murray Wins In Four Sets Over Ivan Ljubicic
After hitting another arrogant, unnecessary tweener, Murray served for the match at 5-4. But he was undone by a steely return game by the dome-headed Croatian, including an incredible stab one-handed backhand return winner off a Murray serve that came in at 131 mph out wide in the ad-court.
But Ljubicic missed a couple makeable short balls in the ensuing tiebreak, and Murray was able to escape without playing a fifth.
With rains earlier in the day closing the roof during the preceding Victoria Azarenka-Daniela Hantuchova contest, Murray was able to move onto the next round without the match being called due to darkness, a match that wouldn’t have finished on any other court. Murray is unlikely to play anywhere but Centre Court for the remainder of the tournament, which should mean that his matches will get in on time, whereas Rafael Nadal (and others) had their matches carried over into Saturday.
