Wimbledon Live Scores: Petra Kvitova Takes First Set In Women’s Semifinal

The tenth day of the 2011 Wimbledon women’s tennis tournament began with Petra Kvitova taking the first set in her semifinal match against Victoria Azarenka. The native of Czech Republic took just 27 minutes to get off to a 6-1 start in the set.

Kvitova was a semifinalist in 2010, her best performance at Wimbledon to date, and seems poised to take it a step further this year after barely dispatching Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova in the quarterfinals with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2 to reach Thursday’s match with Azarenka.

The 21-year-old Kvitova was able to serve up six aces and complete 13 winners overall to take the lead in the first set over the Belarus-born Azarenka. Kvitova also held serve quite well, winning 14-of-17 on her first serve attempts and 5-of-10 on her second serve attempts despite committing three unforced errors. Alternatively, Azarenka was able to put together just four winners in the first set.

The tournament is being shown on ESPN2.
