Maria Sharapova didn’t look spectacular Thursday, but the result’s all that matters, right? The Russian star is back into the Wimbledon final once again after she dispatched of unranked surprise semifinalist Sabine Lisicki in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. It was an impressive run for Lisicki, but she finally met her match in Sharapova, who will face Petra Kvitova in Saturday’s final at Centre Court.
Wimbledon Results: Maria Sharapova Back To Finals With Straight Sets Win
Though she committed a fair number of double faults, Sharapova played a solid match. Those frequent double faults were about all that kept Lisicki in the match at all, as she was consistently overmatched. It seems like the occasion finally got the best of her, as she committed quite a few unforced errors.
Any match where one player commits 12 double faults, then goes on to win very comfortably probably isn’t going to be dubbed a classic by anyone, while some might go so far as to call it unwatchable, but Sharapova won’t mind. A win is a win, and she has a shot at a Wimbledon title.
