French Open 2011 Men’s Final: Rafael Nadal Takes Close First Set From Roger Federer, 7-5
Rafael Nadal leads Roger Federer, 7-5. The 2011 French Open men’s final marks Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s 25th meeting on the court, their silver anniversary, and as we’ve rightly come to expect from tennis’ reigning sacred monsters, they’re giving us a barn-burner. Were they playing in an actual barn that was actually on fire, this match could not be more tense. And they like each other!
The stats, you know: It’s Rafa and Roger’s fourth finals meeting at Roland Garros, where they’ve played for the coupe so many times their 2005 semifinals match is never even mentioned. Nadal needs one more title in Paris to tie Bjorn Borg’s record. If Federer triumphs, there’s every chance Novak Djokovic overtakes Nadal as World No. 1 before Wimbledon.
The plot, however, is being strangely uncooperative. Federer raced out to a shocking 5-2 set lead, only to break his own serve on a botched drop shot and drop five straight games to lose the first set, 7-5. Down one game in the second set, he appears to be wilting. Are we in for another Rafa buzzsaw on the last day of clay?
