French Open 2011: Rafael Nadal Wins Sixth Roland Garros Title, Defeating Roger Federer In Four Sets
No. 1 Rafael Nadal def. No. 3 Roger Federer, 7-5 7-6, 5-7, 6-1. So much for that hell of a fourth set we predicted a half hour ago. Federer’s magic came in fits and starts today, and the fits were fantastic, but not enough. Rafa will, once again, hoist the magnificently-named Coupe des Mousquetaires, while the Maestro must content himself, as ever, with that dinky deviled-egg platter.
Overall, this moves the Nadal-Federer rivalry to 69-8 overall, 12-2 on clay, and 6-2 in Slam finals, with all numbers tilting in favor of the Spaniard. Still, this was statistically Federer’s best match against his favorite frenemy in Paris. He’s got three sets’ worth of play to be proud of, and stands atop the dais praising Rafa’s play in smooth French, to the delight of the home crowd. On to grass, where this will all start all over again.
Stay hydrated, gentle readers. We’ll see you in two weeks for Wimbledon.
