Break out the Atari 2600 and that Warrant t-shirt, the 80’s are finally back. Or at least it may have seemed that way to a full house of 2,381 spectators at New York City’s Sportime Club Thursday night.
John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg Play One Set Exhibition Match
Reunited in the city that held some of their greatest battles, tennis legends John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg duked it out once more, thrilling fans with some of the most geriatric tennis you have ever seen. In a rousing one set match, the 52-year old McEnroe bested the 55-year old Borg, 5-4, rekindling memories of one of the greatest rivalries tennis has ever seen.
Of course, it was all for charity -- Bjorn actually stepped in at the last second to save McEnroe’s fund-raiser afterJimmy Connors bailed on him -- but in the end it was an entertaining night for all involved.
As for the current state of tennis, in which Roger Federer, Rafal Nadal, and Novak Djokovic rule the scene, McEnroe’s feelings are loud and clear. “They’re not bad,” he simply responded when asked. You know a little part of him still thinks he could take them.
