Wayne Odesnik Acts Like Loser, Gets Lucky

After his seven-month ban for transporting HGH (reduced from an original two years) , Wayne Odesnik has built his ranking up from nothing all the way to No. 161, grinding it out on the futures and challenger circuits with considerable success.

↵Sunday in Washington, Odesnik had a chance to make it into the main draw of an ATP tournament for the first time since his suspension, playing against Rajeev Ram in the final round of qualifying at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.

↵But Odesnik lost to the lower-ranked Ram 6-4, 6-4, and ended what had been an uncontentious match with an absurd sequence of terrible (and then non-existent) handshakes with Ram and the chair umpire (via @linzsports).

↵

↵But with No. 2 seed Mardy Fish withdrawing from the tournament, Odesnik makes it into the main draw anyway, as the luckiest of lucky losers.

↵Odesnik get’s Fish’s spot in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic singles draw (including his first-round bye), and will face the winnner of the first round match between Philipp Petzschner and Radek Stepanek.
