U.S. Open 2011: Tournament Will Begin On Time Without Hurricane Irene Delay

The 2011 U.S. Open is set to get underway Monday as planned. There will be no delay associated with Hurricane Irene, which moved up the east coast causing millions of dollars in damage this weekend. The U.S. Open takes place annually at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. Though New York was hit Sunday by Irene, the impact was not as severe as some had feared. By the time Irene hit the state, it had been downgraded to a tropical storm and wind speeds had fallen to 65 miles per hour from 100 mph.

U.S. Tennis Association is still in contact with New York City officials to make sure that road conditions and the mass transit system will be okay for fans heading to the tournament. Matches are set to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
