Roger Federer, Venus Williams Advance In U.S. Open 2011’s First Night Session

Roger Federer found a way to make things interesting in his U.S. Open 2011 first round match against Colombian Santiago Giraldo on Monday night, but still advanced convincingly, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

In the opening set, No. 3 Federer charged out to a 5-1 double-break lead, but allowed himself to be broken back twice by Giraldo. Federer quickly got back on track, however, and broke Giraldo a third time to take the set. In the second set, Federer once again gave up a break advantage twice, but again took the set. The third was a breeze for Federer, winning it easily.

Federer’s win was his 224th career Grand Slam victory, which ties him on the all-time list with Andre Agassi. No. 1 on the list is Jimmy Conners with 233 wins, a mark Federer should easily pass.

Also in action during the first U.S. Open night session was Venus Williams, who enters this year’s tournament unseeded. She made quick work of Vesna Dolonts in just her 11th match of the season, 6-4, 6-3.

U.S. Open 2011 action resumes at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Check here for the Day 2 U.S. Open schedule.
