Jack Sock Headed To 2nd Round Of 2011 U.S. Open Over Frenchman Marc Gicquel

American Jack Sock earned a place in the second round of the 2011 U.S. Open with a victory over Frenchman Marc Gicquel on Wednesday. The 18-year-old Sock won the match in four sets, going 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, earning his first career U.S. Open win. He will face the winner between No. 21 Andy Roddick and Michael Russell, still underway. Sock won the U.S. Open junior title in 2010, becoming the first American to do so since Roddick did it in 2000.

Dennis Istomin of Uzbekistan also advanced to the second round, taking down Ukrainian Ryan Sweeting in four sets, winning a 7-4 tiebreak in the fourth. Istomin will take on Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who made swift work upsetting Nicolas Almagro, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.

On the women’s side, ninth-ranked Samantha Stosur of Australia easily handled Coco Vandeweghe of the U.S. in straight sets, and will move on to face No. 24 Nadia Petrova in the third round.
