John Isner Finishes Off Marcos Baghdatis In Four Sets, Advances To Second Round Of 2011 U.S. Open

John Isner finished off Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 7-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the 2011 U.S. Open. Isner will take on American Robby Ginepri in the second round. Ginepri beat Brazilian Joao Souza in four sets.

Isner, much like in his marathon match against Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon last year, was almost undone by unforced errors. He had 62 unforced errors compared to 24 for Baghdatis. Isner’s serve helped power him through however, with 14 aces in the match compared to 11 for the Cyprian.

In women’s tennis, American Madison Keys was bested by Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, ranked No. 27 in the world. Keys, just 16 years old, took the first set against the favored Safarova. Unfortunately for Keys, her nerves and inexperience would ultimately get the best of her. Safarova will face Monica Niculescu in the third round.
