Andy Roddick Survives, Will Face Jack Sock In Second Round Of 2011 U.S. Open

Andy Roddick survived his first round match over Michael Russell, winning 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the 2011 U.S. Open. Russell, currently ranked 96th in the world, staved off elimination in straight sets with some nice work at the net. Ultimately, he couldn’t break serve in the fourth set, losing the match on a double fault for Roddick’s decisive break point.

Roddick will have to face 18-year-old Jack Sock in the second round. Sock won the junior U.S. Open championship last year which, fittingly, hadn’t been won by an American since Roddick took the title in 2000. Sock beat Frenchman Marc Gicquel, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to advance. A fifth set looked likely when Sock went down 3-1 in the fourth to the 97th-ranked Gicquel. Sock won five of the last six games, however, taking advantage of four unforced errors for Gicquel.
