Francesca Schiavone, Tomas Berdych Among 2011 U.S. Open Day 4 Early Winners

Tomas Berdych advanced to the third round of the 2011 U.S. Open with a straight set win over Italy’s Fabio Fognini on Thursday.

Berdych, the No. 9 seed, was challenged in the first set before settling in and disposing of Fognini 6-0 6-0 in the final two sets. Berdych’s next match will be against No. 20 seed Janko Tipsarevic, who needed four sets to get by Germany’s Philipp Petzschner.

A shoulder injury prompted No. 23 Radek Stepanek to bow out of his match with Juan Monaco in the third set. Stepanek had dropped the first two sets, and was down 2-0 in the third when he retired. No. 29 seed Michael Liondra of France lost in straight sets to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, who advances to the third round of the U.S. Open for the second straight year.

On the woman’s side, Italy’s Francesca Shiavone, the No. 7 seed, needed just 53 minutes to advance to the third round by beating Croatian Mirjana Lucic in straight sets. Schiavone had just one ace, but won on 94 percent of her first serves as Lucic committed 32 unforced errors.

Schiavone will face the winner of the Mona Garthel-Chanelle Scheepers march.
