Serena Williams was already down a set to Australia’s Samantha Stosur when the chair umpire for her 2011 U.S. Open finals match drew Williams’ ire by questioning her yelling during a point. Watch it below.

That led to an outburst from Williams that included her calling the umpire a “hater” and “unattractive inside.”
Most reasonable people would probably agree that Williams barking “Come on!” before a point was fully won was poor form, and that the umpire was well within her rights to both admonish Serena for it and give her a code violation that resulted in the loss of the point and the game.
It would be hard to find any people who would disagree with the idea that Williams continuing to berate the umpire during a changeover, while in keeping with Serena’s passionate approach over the years, was anything other than a poor use of her anger. Williams didn’t fare much better in her second set against Stosur than in the first: she bowed out rather meekly, 6-2, 6-3.
