Spain took a 2-0 lead in its best-of-five series with France in the 2011 Davis Cup semifinal behind straight set victories from Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer. With a victory in the doubles match on Saturday, Spain would advance to the Davis Cup finals in December to face either Serbia or Argentina. The Argentinians currently hold a 1-0 lead in their series.
Rafael Nadal Helps Give Spain 2-0 Davis Cup Lead Over France
Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer lead Spain to a near-insurmountable lead over France in the 2011 Davis Cup semifinals.
Nadal took down Richard Gasquet in commanding fashion, recording a 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Frenchman. Gasquet failed to record a single point during the second set, and did not break Nadal’s serve once during the match. Nadal notched seven break points to improve to 10-0 all time against Gasquet.
Ferrer didn’t quite match Nadal’s mastery, but dominated nonetheless, winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 over Gilles Simon. Ferrer recorded eight break points to Simon’s two, improving to 3-1 against Simon for his career.
France finished second in last year’s Davis Cup to Serbia, but now finds itself in what is likely an insurmountable hole. The French are playing without 7th-ranked Gael Monfils, arguably their brightest star.
