Roger Federer Reaches 2011 U.S. Open Quarters With Early Morning Win

No. 3 seed Roger Federer made quick work of Juan Monaco early Tuesday morning to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2011 U.S. Open.

With a match that started just before midnight, delayed by a three-hour match between woman’s World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and Svetlana Kuznetsova, the five-time U.S. Open champion dropped just three games in winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 in an hour and 22 minutes.

Federer’s next match will be against No. 11 seed Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga of France, who needed five sets to get past American Mardy Fish, the No. 8 seed. Tsonga was down two sets to one before rallying to upset Fish 6-4, 6-2 in the final two sets.

“He’s a tough player and I’ve had some really good matches against him,” Federer said of his Tsonga. “It’s always crazy up and down, just like his match today against Mardy Fish. He’s an exciting player to play against, and I’m looking forward to it. He’s definitely on a good streak. I hope I can stop him this time.”
