Australian Open 2012, Petra Kvitova: Wimbledon Champ Looks For Next Title

The women’s draw for the Australian Open was revealed on Friday and Czech left-hander Petra Kvitova, who captured Wimbledon and WTA Championship titles and was named the WTA’s player of the year in 2011, headlines the bottom quarter as the No. 2 seed overall.

She will take on Russian Vera Dushevina in the opening round. She could tangle with sixth-seeded U.S. Open champ and Aussie crowd favorite Sam Stosur in the quarters.

She is one of nine Grand Slam champs and six players who could be No. 1 after the 2012 Aussie Open.

Kvitova is coming off of a semifinals finish in the Sydney Open where the fourth-seeded Li Na prevented second-seeded Kvitova from reaching No. 1 this week, as the Chinese slugger continued her winning ways at this tournament with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 semifinal victory on Day 5 at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre.
