Serena Williams is, apparently, no fan of bugs. I think that’s something many of us can probably relate to. They are annoying little creatures that seemingly do nothing to further the cycle of life (OK, I’m sure they have a very important role to play in the ecosystem, but work with me).
Serena Williams Doesn’t Like Bugs, Doesn’t Want To Play At Night
Where she diverges from the bulk of humanity, though, is what she’d like to see done as a result of said dislike for bugs (via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution):
“I’m going to request not to play at night anymore because I hate bugs, except for the final. I heard it’s at night,” Williams said.
Like I said, the premise of her displeasure is perfectly understandable. Williams spent much of her 79-minute, first-round match against Tamira Paszek swatting at and trying to get away from the bugs.
But the idea that she’s going to just stop playing at night -- except for the final, which she apparently is totally expecting to be in -- just seems a tad prima dona-esque. It also smacks of a certain lack of self-awareness, something she perfectly illustrated with a quote later in the press conference when she was asked about the near-midnight start and playing with a hurt ankle.
“I don’t let anything bother me,” she said. “It’s definitely different to have the ladies play so late, you know, so we’ll see.”
