Andy Roddick was forced to retire early in his match on Day 4 of the 2012 Australian Open with Lleyton Hewitt due to a knee injury. Roddick was trailing Hewitt in the match after winning the first set 6-4, he dropped the next two, 6-3, 6-4 before he went to the side and called his trainer over. Early in the match Roddick fell, which likely caused the injury.

Andy Roddick’s early attempt to win his first major in nearly in a decade was cut short on Day 4 of the 2012 Australian Open when he was forced to bow out from his match with an injury.

Roddick hasn’t won a major since the 2003 U.S. Open and he’ll be forced to wait even long now, dealing with an injury. Roddick coasted through his first match of the tournament beating Robin Haase in straight sets before being forced to retire on Day 4.
“It’s frustrating,” Roddick told Matt Cronin. “It’s discouraging. You know, your sensible mind says to have a sense of perspective. You still have it pretty good. The competitor in you feels terrible and wants to break stuff. I can’t really complain. I had 10 years pretty much of a clean slate. That’s a lot more than most people get. The last two years has been pretty tough. It’s tough physically. It’s as tough mentally, though. It’s hard.”
“It’s a nightmare for both of us, obviously he stretched something, I don’t know what,” Hewitt told the Associated Press after the match. “It’s not easy for the person up the other end of the court. It’s hard to concentrate when they’re having injury timeouts. You know he’s hurting, but I’ve got to try and block that out as much as possible and that’s not easy to do.”
With Roddick retiring, Hewitt advances to the next round to take on Milos Raonic.
