Australian Open 2012 Results And Scores: Novak Djokovic Advances To Semifinals

The 2012 Australian Open has had its share of surprises thus far, but the men’s bracket has played out pretty much as planned. The top four tennis players have advanced to the semifinals with the last, Serbian player Novak Djokovic, punching his card to the next round with a three-set victory over No. 5 David Ferrer.

Djokovic didn’t exactly make it look easy considering it took him nearly three hours to down the Spaniard, but the tournament’s top seed was able to overcame a hamstring injury to win in straight sets (6-4 7-6(4) 6-1).

“It was a great match. We played almost three hours. After a couple of games I was feeling, ‘Wow, this is going to be a long night,’” Djokovic said afterward. “You have to hang in there with a player like Ferrer. He has a great fighting spirit and he always makes you hit the extra shot. I figured out I needed to step in.”

Djokovic’s victory set up set up a semifinal match-up with Andy Murray, the player he beat in last year’s finals at the Australian Open.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will meet on the other side of the bracket to determine who plays against the Murray-Djokovic winner for the tournament’s championship. Djokovic said he’ll be watching, but not from the arena.

“I will enjoy it from my couch,” he smiled. “Every time they play against each other is a treat for us players and all the fans. I will have dinner at home and watch with my family.”
