VTR Open 2012 Scores And Results: Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela In Action In Chile

The first ATP Tour clay court tournament, the VTR Open in Chile, kicked off Monday, highlighted by world No. 29 Juan Monaco and four-time tournament champ Fernando Gonzalez trying to replace Tommy Robredo, who isn’t participating, as champion.

The tournament, played in Viña del Mar, will pay out $398,250 and will crown a champion Sunday, Feb. 5., when the world’s eyes will surely be watching the final a certain “super” football game. Monaco is the tournament’s top seed, though Juan Ignacio Chela, the No. 2 seed, is actually ranked higher at 25. Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil won the tournament two years ago when he beat Monaco in the final, is seeded thirs, and ranked 37th in the world.

Play opened Monday afternoon with two seeded players succumbing to defeats. Sixth-seed Santiago Giraldo dropped his match to Argentine Leonardo Mayer and eighth-seed Filippo Volandri lost Joao Souza.
