French Open Results: Andy Roddick Defeated In 1st Round, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Advances

Andy Roddick was bounced from the French Open on day one on Sunday, losing to Nicolas Mahut in four sets. Roddick has struggled with his game and motivation recently, and this was yet another early exit and upset at the hands of a lower-ranked player. Mahut was previously known largely for his participation in that marathon match with John Isner at Wimbledon, but he was clearly the better player on Sunday, defeating Roddick 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The Frenchman was previously just 1-9 at the French Open before running into Roddick in the first round. It was another big Paris disappointment for Roddick, who has had a rough clay season.

Former U.S. Open Champion Juan Martin Del Potro played through a left knee issue to advance with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-1 win over Albert Montanes. Del Potro had tape on his knee and added further wrapping after the second set, but he carried on to defeat Montanes in four sets.

World No. 5 and the local favorite, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcame a slow start to defeat Andrey Kuznetsov, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 winner at Roland Garros, moved on as well with a straight set (6-1, 6-4, 6-3) win over Jonathan Dasnieres de Veigy.
