French Open Results: Nadal Cruises Over Simon Bolelli; Maria Sharapova Wins 12 Straight Games To Advance Tuesday

There have been few surprises so far on Day 3 of the 2012 French Open. There were no major upsets on the men’s or women’s sides of the draw Tuesday, as the No. 2 seeds, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova, advanced to the second round with straight-set victories.

Nadal’s bid for a record seventh French Open title is off to a good start. He beat Simon Bolelli of Italy, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, to set up a date with Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the next round. Nadal converted on 7-of-9 break point point opportunities and successfully defended 4-of-5 of Bolelli’s chances. Nadal had 20 winners to 14 for his opponent in yet another dominant display on clay.

Maria Sharapova won 12 straight games for a 6-0, 6-0, win over Alexandra Cadantu. Sharapova was extremely efficient, winning 83 percent of her eligible first serves. She successfully defended all three of her opponent’s break point opportunities, while converting 6-of-9 of her own chances. Sharapova takes on Ayumi Morita of Japan in the next round of the Open.

No. 4 Andy Murray defeated Japan’s Tatsuma Ito, 6-1, 7-5, 6-0, and will take on Jarkko Nieminen in the second round. Outside of a troublesome second set, Murray dominated his opponent, converting on 8-of-9 net-approach chances for the match. No. 6 David Ferrer beat Lukas Lacko, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1, to move on to face Frances’ Benoit Paire. Ferrer was taken to break point just twice over the course of the match.

The No. 4 seed on the women’s bracket, Petra Kvitova, had another easier victory. She took out Australia’s Ashleigh Barty, 6-1, 6-2, and will meet Urszula Radwanska of Poland in the next round. Kvitova had 16 winners while holding her opponent to just three for the match.
