French Open Results: Maria Sharapova Picks Up Impressive Win, Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga Stays Alive

The 2012 French Open is in the fourth round; predictably, the action at Roland Garros is heating up already on Monday morning (in America). Halfway through Monday’s action, Maria Sharapova has already picked up an impressive win on the women’s side while fifth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was able to alive in the men’s bracket.

Sharapova, the second-ranked woman entering this year’s French Open, looked as though she was on her way to dispatching Klara Zakopalova in straight sets on Monday. The Czechoslovakian native was able to win a second round tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5), before Sharapova re-staked her dominance with a 6-2 victory in the third set to advance to the quarterfinals.

On the men’s side of the bracket, Tsonga lasted through a five-set marathon against Stanislas Wawrinka after winning the first two sets of the match. It won’t get any easier for the victor, as Tsonga is set to face top-ranked Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

Other early winners on Monday included Nicolas Almagro and David Ferrer advancing in straight sets while Juan Martin del Potro needed a fourth set to upset No. 7 Tomas Berdych in a match that began on Sunday.

There are still a few high-profile athletes left to take the courts on Monday, too -- Rafael Nadal will play Juan Monaco and Andy Murray will face Richard Gasquet on the men’s side. On the women’s side, No. 4 Petra Kvitova is still waiting to play Varvara Lepchenko.
