The 2012 Mercury Insurance Open is set to begin first-round action on Monday. The top four seeds in the tournament --Marion Bartoli, Dominika Cibulkova, Jelena Jankovic and Nadia Petrova -- all advance directly to the second round. Plenty of big names will be in play Monday and Tuesday, however.
2012 Mercury Insurance Open Preview: 1st Round Begins Monday
The first round of the 2012 Mercury Insurance Open begins Monday. Promising young Americans like Christina McHale, Sloane Stephens and Coco Vandeweghe will try to prove their worth Monday and Tuesday.

Christina McHale is the No. 5 seed in Carlsbad and the second-ranked American women’s player in the world. She is still looking for her first WTA tournament win, however. She will take Jarmila Gajdosova from Australia.
Sloane Stephens will be another intriguing player to watch. The 19-year-old took out No. 11 Li Na in straight sets at Wimbledon earlier this month, proving she is capable of taking on anyone in the field at the Open. Her first-round opponent is Sorana Cirstea of Romania.
San Diego native Coco Vandeweghe will try to put on a show in front of a hometown crowd. She takes on No. 8 seed Chanelle Scheepers.
