The 2012 Wimbledon tournament came to a conclusion on Sunday afternoon, with a thrilling four set match between Roger Federer and Andy Murray. The men’s final, which was spilling over with storyline, pulled big ratings for ESPN over the weekend.

According to Deitsch, the previous highest rated tennis events for ESPN included the 1995 Aussie Open final, which pitted Andre Agassi against Pete Sampras.
It’s no surprise that this year’s Wimbledon final drew great ratings, given the storyline of the final as mentioned. Andy Murray was the first British male to make the final since 1938 and looked like he might be playing well enough to bring home the crown. On the other side, Roger Federer was thought by many to be “done” and on the downslope of his career, but he bested Murray in the finals on his way to his seventh Wimbledon Title, 17th Grand Slam. He also took back the No. 1 ranking in the world.
