American Mardy Fish has advanced through the first round of the 2012 U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Fish was tested through his opening-round match by Go Soeda of Japan. The two men battled through tiebreaks in the first two sets, but Fish was finally able to overtake Seoda in the final set and take the match 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2), 6-3.

Fish, the No. 23 seed, won the match on the strength of his serve. He finished with 12 aces to just three for Seoda, and won 75% of his first-serve points compared to 63% for his opponent. Fish’s second serve was also effective, garnering 62% of the points, compared to 49% for Geoda,
The best overall finish for Fish in the U.S. Open came in 2008, when he advanved to the quarterfinals.
