2012 U.S. Open Scores: David Ferrer Opens Tournament With Win Over Kevin Anderson

David Ferrer began his U.S. Open underdog campaign Wednesday by defeating South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(3) in straight sets.

Ferrer made what was expected to be a rough opening round look relatively easy, making Anderson’s solid serving seem quite manageable in the process. It seemed Anderson might began a slight comeback with a third-set tiebreak but Ferrer continued to somehow return his opponent’s serves until Anderson slipped up.

Ferrer will now face off against Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands, who is advancing to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career after defeating Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe also defeated the number 29 seeded Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the first upset of the day on the men’s side.
