U.S. Open 2012 Tennis Scores: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Suffers 2nd-Round Upset To Martin Klizan

France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga became the victim of the 2012 U.S. Open’s first major upset Thursday, as the No. 5 seed lost to Slovakia’s Martin Klizan, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. This is the first time in Tsonga’s career he’s been eliminated in the second round of the Open.

For Klizan, who’s ranked No. 52 in the world, this is by far the biggest victory of his career. Klizan, who took advantage of Tsonga’s mediocre serve speed all match long, moves onto the third round to face either Jeremy Chardy or Matthew Ebden.

Statically, Klizan dominated second services points as he won 53-percent (25 of 47), while Tsonga won just 38-percent (15 of 40). Klizan also won 60-percent (18 of 30) of the net points, while Tsonga won just 58-percent (15-of 36).
