U.S. Open 2012: No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska Wins Despite Ugly First Set

Agnieszka Radwanska, the No. 2 seed in the women’s draw at the 2012 U.S. Open, found herself struggling in the first set of her second-round match with Carla Suarez Navarro. But after regrouping, Radwanska found her game in the second set and cruised in the third to advance to the third round of the Grand Slam event in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Suarez Navarro didn’t back down in the first set, defeating the 23-year-old Radwanska 6-4 despite the favorite winning 11 of 15 net points. Radwanska came back to win the second set 6-3, winning two of her three break-point opportunities and tallying nine unforced errors in the set to the Spaniard’s 15.

The third set was all Radwanska, who breezed 6-0 in just 26 minutes by winning 14 of 21 receiving points and allowing only seven total points by Suarez Navarro.

Awaiting Radwanska in the third round is No. 30 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, who earlier on Thursday defeated Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino in straight sets of 6-4, 6-2.
