2012 U.S. Open Scores: Lleyton Hewitt Wins Five-Set Marathon

It took Leyton Hewitt around four and a half hours, but he finally bested Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in five sets, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4.

Muller did most of his damage on his first serve, winning 90 of 106 points that way, but Hewitt countered by winning 63 second-serve points to stay on track. Muller outpaced Hewitt on winners, grabbing 95 winners to 69. He even won more points on the match, taking a 188-182 advantage. But Muller was undone by 69 unforced errors, which kept him from pulling away. Those errors allowed Hewitt to recover and win the final two sets.

Hewitt advances to the third round, where he’ll take on David Ferrer. Ferrer beat Igor Sijsling 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (14-12) in straight sets.
