Roger Federer showed on Saturday why he’s the top seed at this year’s U.S. Open by punching his ticket into the fourth round with a win over Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.
U.S. Open 2012 Scores: Roger Federer Keeps Rolling, Bests Fernando Verdasco In Straight Sets
Federer bested Verdasco in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Verdasco was a game opponent as always, but Federer cruised to his victory without much issue. He was greatly assisted by the fact that Verdasco struggled with his accuracy and had 35 unforced errors.
To contrast, Federer had just 19 unforced errors. Verdasco just couldn’t compete with Federer’s serve. Federer boasted a first-serve percentage of 67 percent for the full match. The final point was an excellent high backhand volley for a winner by Federer.
Federer will move on to face the winner of Saturday night’s matchup between No. 23 seed Mardy Fish and No. 16 seed Gilles Simon of France.
Other players including Nicolas Almagro and Marin Cilic advanced to round four prior to Federer’s matchup finishing on Saturday. Fish bested Nikolay Davydenko and Simon bested Jimmy Wang to make it to their matchup.
