Americans Sam Querrey and John Isner lost their opening matches on the clay court Friday, to give Spain a 2-0 lead in the Davis Cup semifinals.

Querrey was able to steal one early against David Ferrer, but ultimately the Spaniard won the best-of-five series, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. Isner put up a tougher fight against his opponent yet still suffered the same fate, falling to Nicolas Almagro, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
With the victories, Spain sits just one point away from their fourth final in the past five years. Brothers Mike and Bob Bryan must be victorious in their Saturday doubles match against Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez if the U.S. is to stay alive.
Spain is 37-0 after winning both opening singles matches in World Group play. Additionally, the United States has only bounced back from down 0-2 to steal a series once in the team’s history (1934 against the Australians).
The winner of this semifinal round will move on to face either Argentina or the Czech Republic later in November.
