2012 U.S. Open Tennis Scores: Andy Roddick Defeats Fabio Fognini To Advance To Fourth Round

Andy Roddick successfully moved into the round of 16 with a four-set win over Fabio Fognini at the 2012 U.S. Open on Sunday. The win helps push Roddick’s announced retirement back at least another day.

Roddick took the first two sets of the match 7-5 and 7-6, but faltered in the third, losing 4-6. For a moment, it looked like Fognini would pull away from Roddick in the fourth set before a series of unforced errors cost him. Roddick looked exhausted early in the fourth set, but found some energy as Fognini grew frustrated. Roddick put Fognini away with an unreturnable serve to take the fourth set 6-4.

Fognini made Roddick work extremely hard in the match, finishing with a 15-9 advantage in aces. However, 36 unforced errors cost Fognini, especially in the final set. Roddick finished with 30 unforced errors, but only three came in the final set.
