U.S. Open 2012 Tennis Scores: Juan Martin Del Potro Advances To Fourth Round

Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro defeated fellow countryman Leonardo Mayer on Sunday in Flushing Meadows, advancing to the fourth round of the 2012 U.S. Open with a 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (11-9) victory that took three hours and 20 minutes.

Del Potro, seeded seventh at this year’s tournament, is the last man not named Federer, Nadal or Djokovic to win a title in the past 30 majors contested, capturing the title in New York in 2009. He was unable to defend his crown in 2010 due to a wrist injury, and fell in the third round of the 2011 tournament. Del Potro most recently captured the bronze medal at the London Summer Games, defeating Novak Djokovic in a third-place match.

Del Potro will now await the winner of the Andy Roddick versus Fabio Fognini match in the quarterfinals. Roddick, who captured the U.S. Open crown in 2003, has said he will retire after this year’s tournament.
