The match was a familiar one for Williams, who with sister Venus Williams, defeated Hlavackova and her teammate in the 2012 London Olympics gold medal match for women’s doubles.
Next on the schedule for Williams is No. 12 seed Ana Ivanovic, who defeated Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Ivanovic, a 24-year-old Serbian, also beat her Monday opponent in impressive fashion, winning in straight sets of 6-0, 6-4. Pironkova was struggling with a neck injury during the match.
