2012 U.S. Open: Day Session Suspended

Afternoon play at the 2012 U.S. Open was suspended on Tuesday due to rain, creating a scheduling problem on the men’s side of the bracket as more matches must now be squeezed into a smaller amount of time.

No. 4 David Ferrer of Spain was beating No. 13 Frenchman Richard Gasquet, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), 4-3, when the day session was officially suspended. Each man were able to break the other with relative ease in the first set, as Ferrer converted three of four breaks and Gasquet converted two of his three opportunities. Gasquet had numerous chances to take charge in the second set, but only converted one of seven break points. The Frenchman had a 4-2 lead, but Ferrer broke back and ended up winning the set in a tiebreaker.

A long rain delay paused the match tied at 2-2 during the third set. Play briefly resumed but stopped again when the day session was suspended with Ferrer leading 4-3 and up 30-15 during Gasquet’s serve. With Rafael Nadal out of the U.S. Open, Ferrer is the highest-ranked Spaniard in the tournament, and the man most likely to join the three favorites (top seeds Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray) in the semifinals.

On the women’s side, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka topped No. 7 Samantha Stosur, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), before play was suspended. Azarenka will face the winner of the match between No. 3 Maria Sharapova and No. 11 Marion Bartoli. Bartoli was up 4-0 in the first set when play was suspended.
