2012 U.S. Open Tennis Results: Djokovic, Ferrer Gain Semifinal Berths Thursday

A classic showdown between No. 4 David Ferrer and No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic in a quarterfinal meeting dramatically highlighted Thursday’s action from the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

After a back-and-forth battle, a fifth-set tiebreaker was required to decide the match, with the Spaniard Ferrer outlasting Tipsarevic, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the semifinals at the year’s final major tournament.

No. 2 Novak Djokovic joined fourth-ranked Ferrer in the semis with a straight-set victory over No. 7 Juan Martin del Potro during the night session, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

In doubles action, the unranked duo of Russian Ekaterina Makarova and Brazilian Bruno Soares teamed up to capture the mixed doubles title at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, downing No. 4 Kveta Peschke and Marcin Matkowski.

The men’s and women’s doubles finals were also set on Thursday with No. 2 Bob and Mike Bryan set to take on No. 5 Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek. The Italian duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, ranked second, will take on No. 3 Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic after both duos were victorious on Thursday.
