There were no big surprises on Day 2 at the Australian Open, as the favorites in the bottom half of the bracket moved through to the second round unscathed. No. 2 Roger Federer encountered little resistance in his opening match against Benoit Paire, starting with a break of Paire and advancing in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. The match at Laver Arena lasted just 83 minutes and Federer will now face Nikolay Davydenko in the second round.
2013 Australian Open bracket update: Roger Federer, Andy Murray cruise to 2nd round
The bottom half of the men’s bracket opened play on Day 2 at the Aussie Open, and there were no major upsets as the top seeds advanced to the second round.

Aussie Bernard Tomic also advanced at the bottom of the bracket, setting up a potential third-round match between Federer and the local favorite. Tomic is fresh off his first ever ATP title -- a win in Sydney this past weekend -- and he handled Leonardo Mayer in straight sets. He’ll face Daniel Brands in the second round.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was the biggest name advancing in Federer’s bracket, moving on with a straight-set victory over Michael Llodra. The No. 7 Tsonga and Federer would not meet until the quarterfinals.

The favorites in Andy Murray’s portion of the bracket also avoided a first-round upset on Day 2. Murray breezed past Robin Haase, and Juan Martin Del Potro had similar success in a straight-sets win over Adrian Mannarino. The biggest upset in this portion of the bracket occurred when Frenchman Gael Monfils survived a four-set battle to defeat No. 18 Alexandr Dolgopolov. The first two sets were split with each player winning a tiebreak, but Monfils rolled 6-3, 6-3 in the third and fourth set to take it. Here’s a complete and updated bottom half of the men’s bracket.
