Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams both cruised in the first round of the 2013 Australian Open on Tuesday.

Azarenka dropped Romania’s Monica Niculescu in sets of 6-1 and 6-4. The No. 1 seed overall controlled the first set, placing 23-of-27 of her first serves in as Niculescu struggled to do the same. And when the Romanian had a serve, Azarenka won the point 12-of-13 times. While the second set was more competitive, Azarenka eventually fended off Niculescu despite finding herself down 0-3 early on.

Meanwhile, Williams rolled 6-0, 6-0 to beat Romanian Edina Gallovits-Hall after rolling her ankle in the middle of the first set. After an injury break and a wrapped right ankle, she showed no signs of looking hurt thereafter.

Azarenka will face Eleni Danilidou of Greece in the second round, while Williams will take on Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.

In other top-10 seeded action, No. 10 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark defeated Germany’s Sabine Lisicki, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

No. 33 Carla Suarez Navarro upset No. 7 seed Sara Errani on Tuesday, 6-4, 6-4.
