Australian Open 2013: Brian Baker injures knee, withdraws from tournament

Brian Baker suffered another injury on Wednesday in Melbourne, tearing the lateral meniscus in his right knee.

Leading Sam Querrey, 7-6 (2), 1-1, Baker fell to the court holding his right knee. He eventually got up and hobbled over to his chair, where he retired from the match. There was an initial fear that Baker had suffered ligament damage, but tournament organizers later announced that it was a meniscus injury. The injury should still keep him out for at least the next four months.

The American was out of tennis for six years due to a string of injuries before returning to the Tour last season. Baker was attempting to continue his comeback as a 27-year-old, a relatively old age in the tennis world, before having to withdraw on Wednesday.

Over his career, Baker has endured five surgeries to a variety of body parts, including his hips and elbow. However, this is the first serious knee injury Baker has ever dealt with.
