Day 3 of the 2013 Australian Open settled the second round in the top half of the men’s bracket, with no real upsets taking place. No. 1 Novak Djokovic took care of American Ryan Harrison in straight sets to advance to the third round, where he will face Radek Stepanek. The Czech needed five sets to beat Viktor Troicki in the first round, but had little trouble in Wednesday’s second round match against Feliciano Lopez. Djokovic, however, will be an all together different challenge and a heavy favorite to advance.

The third round in the top half of the men’s bracket is set at the Australian Open, with the highest-ranked players moving through.

Sam Querrey advanced past fellow American Brian Baker, but certainly not in the manner he had hoped. Baker was forced to withdraw in the second set after tearing his meniscus. Querrey will play No. 15 Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round for the right to likely take on Djokovic. Tomas Berdych is at the bottom of Djokovic’s bracket, with the two on a quarterfinals collision course. Berdych did not drop a set in his first two matches.
No. 4 David Ferrer also encountered little difficulty moving through to the third round. Ferrer will get Marcos Baghdatis in the third round. Nicolas Almagro and Janko Tipsarevic are the two highest ranked players remaining in Ferrer’s portion of the bracket. Almagro needed only three sets to defeat fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver on Day 3, while Tipsarevic found himself in a five-set war against Lukas Lacko. Almagro will next face Jerzy Janowicz, who had a bit of a meltdown in the second round but still advanced.
The bottom half of the bracket will be complete their second round matches on Day 4, with both Roger Federer and Andy Murray in action.
