Novak Djokovic is back in a familiar spot: the final match. He defeated David Ferrer to advance to the finals of the Australian Open.

It’s rare that an athlete would call his or her performance “perfect.” But that’s what Novak Djokovic said. And that’s what Novak Djokovic was.

Djokovic advanced to the Australian Open finals with a convincing 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 win over David Ferrer on Thursday night. The top-seeded Djokovic knocked off the fourth-ranked Ferrer in just one hour and 29 minutes.

“I played perfectly,” Djokovic said after the match in a TV interview. “I played incredible tennis.”

Djokovic is aiming to win his third straight Australian Open. He defeated Rafael Nadal last year and Andy Murray the year before. Djokovic also won the Australian Open in 2008 when he beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets.

Djokovic’s opponent in this year’s Australian Open is to be determined. He will play the winner of No. 2-ranked Roger Federer and No. 3-ranked Andy Murray. Federer is a four-time Australian Open champ, while Murray won last year’s U.S. Open.
