Andy Murray held a slim lead in the lifetime series against Roger Federer, but he needed five thrilling sets to get his first Grand Slam win against Federer.

Roger Federer forced two tiebreaks against Andy Murray and won them both, but the Scotsman wouldn’t be denied, beating Federer for the first time in a Grand Slam event in a five-set duel that puts Murray in the Australian Open Finals.

It seems every match between some combination of Federer, Murray, Novak Djokovic, and -- when healthy -- Rafael Nadal turns into some sort of hugely exciting five-setter. It surely did Friday, as Murray got to six games in every set, but lost a pair of tiebreakers as Federer forced the full five.

Murray had been absolutely dominant thus far in Melbourne, with Federer the first opponent to even win a set off of him. But as the match wore on, Federer lost his legs. Just two days removed from another five-setter with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga -- the first time Federer had ever played back-to-back five-set matches in a Grand Slam -- he was broken early in the fifth set and couldn’t muster a comeback.
Murray had played Federer three times in Grand Slams, all in finals, losing in 2008 at the U.S. Open, 2010 at the Australian Open, and last year at Wimbledon. However, he did get a win in the Gold Medal match at this year’s Olympics.
