The second round of the ATP Singles are under way at the 2013 Sony Open on Friday, and some of the big names have already wrapped up their matches. There’s still more to come with Novak Djokovic in action later Friday, but let’s talk about what’s happened thus far.
2013 Sony Open Tennis: Janko Tipsarevic advances, Novak Djokovic still to come
A couple of seeded opponents are already out of the 2013 Sony Open on Wednesday, but No. 7 Janko Tipsarevic and No. 3 David Ferrer managed to advance.

No. 7 Janko Tipsarevic advanced in his matchup against Dudi Sela of Israel, winning 6-2, 6-4. Some other seeded players struggled, however, as No. 22 Florian Mayer and No. 22 Jeremy Chardy both lost their matches. Xavier Malisse bested Chardy, 6-3, 6-2, and Grega Zemlja took our Mayer, 6-3, 7-6(3).
No. 12 Juan Monaco also fell, losing to Albert Ramos, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Notably victorious were James Blake and Kei Nishikori. Blake, a wildcard, bested No. 24 seed Julien Benneteau, 6-2, 6-3, while No. 13 Nishikori took out Victor Hanescu, 6-3, 6-3.
No. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro is currently in a match against Tobias Kamke and, at the time of writing, Del Potro is down a set and trailing 4-0 in the second set, so there’s an upset alert. No. 11 Gilles Simon is taking on Lleyton Hewitt, but that match has just started, and Novak Djokovic will take on Lukas Rosol later on Friday.
No. 3 David Ferrer didn’t play as his opponent, Dmitry Tursunov, was out with an injury.
