Sony Open Tennis 2013 results: Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova headline Sunday winners

Djokovic and Sharapova were two of the top players advancing to the fourth round Sunday at the Sony Open. Who else will continue their run in Miami?

The top seeds at the 2013 Sony Open remained in control during Sunday’s action in Miami, most cruising to victory in third-round play. No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic easily defeated Somdev Devvarman 6-2, 6-4, while third-ranked Maria Sharapova came away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Elena Vesnina.

Djokovic needed just 68 minutes to move past his Devvarman, easily controlling his service games and facing just one break point throughout the entire match. The two-time defending champion has yet to drop a set, looking like he’ll make a run at a third consecutive title at Key Biscayne.

While Sharapova took a bit longer to finish off Vesnina (one hour and 49 minutes), she constantly forced break points and kept her opponent reeling. The second-ranked player on the WTA is coming off a win at Indian Wells where she didn’t lose a single set in the entire tournament.

No. 3 seed David Ferrer knocked off No. 32 seed Fabio Fognini 6-1, 7-5, while No. 7 seed Janko Tipsarevic defeated No. 26 seed Kevin Anderson 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-0. Gilles Simon, Kei Nishikori and Tommy Haas all advanced in straight sets. There weren’t any upsets from the men’s draw, but James Blake made an exit after losing 4-6, 6-2, 5-7 to Albert Ramos. The American veteran was putting together a nice run before falling to the Spaniard.

In the women’s draw, No. 8 seed Sara Errani breezed past Simona Halep 6-1, 6-0. Ana Ivanovic also cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. Nadia Petrova, Maria Kirilenko and Angelique Kerber were all upset.
