The ATP Singles quarterfinals got started at the 2013 Sony Open on Wednesday, and there’s been plenty of action thus far. No. 3 seed David Ferrer advanced to his third semifinal at Miami with a victory over unseeded Jurgen Melzer, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

No. 3 seed David Ferrer advanced to the semifinals at the 2013 Sony Open on Wednesday, besting unseeded Jurgen Melzer.

Melzer was a tough opponent from the beginning. He was coming off wins over Albert Ramos, who took out No. 12 seed Juan Monaco earlier in the tournament, and Tobias Kamke, who took out No. 5 seed Juan Martin Del Potro himself.
Ferrer handily took the second set and then dominated the third. He broke Melzer three times in five opportunities in the third set, sealing the win at one hour and 55 minutes. He’ll have his hands full in the next round, where he’ll either take on No. 15 seed Tommy Haas, who just upset world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, or No. 11 Gilles Simon.
In WTA action, No. 3 Maria Sharapova took down No. 8 seed Sara Errani, winning that match 7-5, 7-5. That advances Sharapova to the semifinals, as she searches for her first win at the tournament. She’s been a runner-up four separate times.
Still to come on Wednesday is the Haas vs. Simon matchup on the ATP side, while No. 22 Jelena Jankovic is currently taking on No. 15 Robert Vinci on the WTA side.
