2013 Sony Open Tennis: David Ferrer bests Tommy Haas, advances to finals

No. 3 seed David Ferrer was victorious in his semifinal matchup against Tommy Haas on Friday, and will take on either Richard Gasquet or Andy Murray on Sunday.

One half of the ATP Semifinals is in the books and the other half is under way at the 2013 Sony Open on Friday.

No. 3 seed David Ferrer halted the impressive streak by No. 18 Tommy Haas. Ferrer took the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the finals.

Haas had a strong showing to take the first set, but quickly fell behind in the second. He managed to get up a break on Ferrer in the third with a 3-1 lead, putting Ferrer on edge. But Haas seemed to tire as the match went on, which isn’t surprising for the 34-year-old veteran.

In all, Haas struggled with his serve and Ferrer made enough athletic plays to create the long rallies that were eventually Haas’ undoing. Ferrer improved to 25-4 this year, and leads the ATP Tour in victories. Haas wraps up a strong run in which he bested No. 19 Alexandr Dolgopolov, No. 11 Gilles Simon and, much more impressively, No. 1 Novak Djokovic en route to the semifinals.

Ferrer will play in the finals on Sunday against the winner of the match between No. 8 Richard Gasquet and No. 2 Andy Murray, which is taking place on Friday as well. At the time of writing, Gasquet is up by a set at the start of the second.
