Sony Open Tennis 2013 women’s final: Serena Williams defeats Maria Sharapova in 3 sets

Serena Williams continued her dominance over Maria Sharapova at the 2013 Sony Open final, defeating the Russian in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Sharapova’s first serve helped guide her to a first-set victory. Sharapova won 78 percent of her first serves in the first set, but failed to serve that well for the entire match. In the second set, Sharapova won just 60 percent of her first serves, and a paltry 9 percent of her second serves.

The third set belonged entirely to Williams, as she imposed her will on Sharapova, finishing the tournament with a dominant 6-0 set.

Williams finished the match with six aces, while Sharapova failed to record one ace. Second serves were the difference in the match, as Williams won 47 percent of her second serves, compared to Sharapova’s 24 percent.

With the victory, Williams ran her winning streak over Sharapova to 11. Sharapova hasn’t defeated Williams since 2004, when she bested Williams at Wimbledon and the Tour Championships. The win gives Williams her 48th career title.
